3. “The Man Called Santa,” Silver Comics (2004)

Remember that kid in your third grade Sunday school class who was the first in your group to realize “Santa” is an anagram of “Satan”? Yeah, he wasn’t the only one to make that connection. First appearing in Silver Comics #1, a labour of love by former Disney and Warner Bros. artist Johnny Ortiz (who was aided and abetted by a slew of comic-book legends), “The Man Called Santa” follows the one and only Santa Claus in an epic battle against the Prince of Lies that for some reason also involves Martians (and don’t forget Rudolph the Laser-Nosed Reindeer!). And lest you think a steady diet of milk and cookies has left Santa too flabby for a fight to the finish with the Lord of Darkness, here’s one of Santa’s typical lines from the series: “The time has come for all of us to stand up and be judged as naughty or nice — because SANTA CLAUS is going to town!!” Badass? Doesn’t even begin to cover it.

George Tuska passed away early this morning. He was 93 years old. George will always be remembered by most fans for his work on Iron-Man, Avengers or Luke Cage for Marvel Comics but I'll remember him for being the cool guy that contributed two Cloud-Buster covers for Silver Comics. I have yet to print the second cover for the front of SC#11. At a time when most comics are full of multi-colored clutter, it's a pleasure to open up a book drawn by George and appreciate the clear story-telling and staging. For this, his work inspired a lot of my own. As is the case with most great artist, George's legacy will live on. My condolences to his family.

A couple of months ago, I wrote about San Diego Comic Con International’s Mecca-like influence on the masses. After 40 years, the “Con” has become a place where the inner geek is embraced, and where pop-culture aficionados join other like-minded folks to share in the common joys of all things comic books, sci-fi, literature, film and video games.

Given the throngs of fans who attended last July’s event, it’s no surprise that Long Beach got into the game with “Long Beach Comic Con.”

It took place last weekend at the Long Beach Convention Center and produced by MAD Event Management, “Long Beach Comic Con” presented a plethora of the industry’s best and brightest comic book talent, publishers, gaming companies, special guests and must-attend programming sessions.

In an earlier interview, Martha Donato, president of MAD Event Management, told the Gazette’s Darcy Leigh Richardson, “Other comics-related events have happened in Long Beach in the past, but this weekend’s event has an all-star slate of comic writers, creators and artists along with several mass media celebrities that could rival the San Diego Comic Con International.”

Even Marvel Comics, one of the industry’s leading publishers, got into the spirit of things. To demonstrate their support for this new event, the company offered a limited-edition “Amazing Spiderman” #606 comic book with a variant cover by J. Scott Campbell given exclusively for attendees who pre-ordered their tickets.

The biggest highlight of the event, however, was having Mr. Marvel himself, Stan “The Man” Lee host the ribbon cutting at the event’s opening. Lee is best known for creating iconic super-hero fan favorites like The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, The X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, and Spider-Man.

Mr. Lee also was the guest of two meet-and-greets where he, along with famed comic artist Jim Lee (no relation), met with fans and signed a variety of media. This was a major coup, especially since Mr. Lee rarely makes appearances.

Other notable artists included Karl Alstaetter, Mike Choi, Amanda Conner, Brett Lewis, Rob Liefield, Scott Lobdell, Jeph Loeb, Dustin Nguyen, Whilce Portacio, Trevor Roth, Alex Sinclair, Mark Waid, Scott Williams and more.

Lionsgate Films, Aspen Entertainment, Nintendo and Barnes and Noble Long Beach were some of the exhibitors seen on the showroom floor. The best discovery was Silver Comics, an up-and-coming comic book publisher resurrecting the artistic style of the Silver Age (1956-1970).

A few years ago, Anime Expo — a convention focusing on Japanese comic books and animation — took place at the Convention Center, drawing thousands of people. Unfortunately, it got too big and had to be moved somewhere else the following year, leaving fans hungry for more.

Long Beach Comic Con was the perfect feast.

Saturday’s event brought in the largest crowd. At one point, fans stood in line for two hours waiting to meet artist Jim Lee, while others shopped for comic books, toys and original art.

“This (event) is what it’s all about: the comics, the artists, and the fans,” said Julie, 28, a self-professed fan. “If it comes back next year, I’ll be here!”

Long Beach Comic Con A Soaring Success In First Year

When you're trying to create a new tradition, it can sometimes take years to get something off the ground—but sometimes it happens in a flash. The Long Beach Comic Con, in its first year, was an unqualified success, with a good crowd packing the convention floor, great guests and panels, and of course, a perfect setting in the LBC.

From Berkeley Breathed making a rare appearance to promote the new Complete Bloom County collection on Saturday, to Stan Lee cutting the red ribbon, it was certainly a great way to get things kicked off. The biggest coup for promoters was that Marvel and DC not only held panels, but a few announcements were made, which had Long Beach Comic Con in the ears of comics fans across the nation.

The biggest news was the announcement that DC editor-in-chief Dan Didio will be writing a new Outsiders series—apparently a job he appointed himself to. Marvel's Jeph Loeb also hosted a panel for his company, joking with fans about the recent purchase of Marvel by Disney. He gave a speech that should put some paranoid fans at ease: "From what I understand, it won't affect publishing," he said. "Pixar is its own company. Marvel is its own little company. On the other side of it, you're talking about Disney, which is probably the best licensing company in the world. I think ultimately what it'll mean to you guys is that those brands will be in a lot more places." Loeb also assured fans that he and Tim Sale's new series, Captain America: White (which has taken a lot longer to go to press than anticipated) will definitely be out before the movie.

Other personal highlights were the appearance of big names like Geoff Johns, and a sneak screening of Trick-R-Treat, a new rated-R horror anthology coming on Tuesday from writer/director Michael Dougherty. All in all, it was a great weekend, and we hope you enjoyed our coverage. But, certainly, not as much as we hope you'll enjoy our coverage of next year's convention!

Silver Comics #8

And here I thought I was getting a new Michael Neno comic. Well, technically I am (he has the first story in this collection), but there’s much more to this than just one story. Before I get started, click on that website above. There’s a cover collection there, and if that isn’t the sort of thing that you like, you’ll know it instantly. These books are basically new versions of silver age comics, with the occasional wackiness thrown in, but they’re basically faithful versions of that type of story with some funny thrown in. First up is the story by Michael Neno, which just so happens to be the cover story. Well, this cover story anyway, there’s also an excellent back cover. Someone is attacking all the milk men and none of the children are getting their milk, so an enigmatic hero called The End decides to help them out by going undercover. Yes, you will find many puns about spilt milk, and yes, “The End” is used as a pun more than once. It’s still a thoroughly entertaining story. Next up is The Day of the Ice Menace by Johnny Ortiz, Dan Beltran and Mark Prudeax, dealing with an Iron Man-ish character trying to stop a mysterious ball of energy. He touches the ball, which quickly encases him in a block of cosmic ice, but manages to fly to a nearby volcano to get out of it. This story captures the feel of those old stories perfectly as the hero flits from catastrophe to catastrophe before the shocking ending. Finally there’s Let Them Be Damned by the same crew of Ortiz, Beltran and Prudeax, which deals with a depressed Santa (after Satan has taken over his job) trying to get his fighting spirit back with the help of Rudolph. More mayhem and I particularly enjoyed the “to be continued” ending, knowing that it probably won’t ever be continued unless this is part of a much larger Santa storyline that I missed by not getting the earlier issues. All of this is wrapped up by a text piece from Dennis Rau with Dan Beltran, which was entertaining enough even if it felt slightly out of place alongside all the illustrated shenanigans. Finally there are a few pin-ups and fake ads, and you’re left with a thoroughly entertaining fake silver age comic. Like I said, you already know if this sort of thing, done well, is something you’d enjoy. This is done extremely well, so it’s your call. And it’s cheap! $1.95

Nadya Vessey was a child when her legs were amputated due to an illness. When asked about them, she said that she was a once mermaid; now with her prosthetic tail, she finally is one.

Infatuated with the idea of being a mermaid, Vessey contacted Weta Workshop—the special-effects team that worked on the Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia series—about creating a prosthetic mermaid's tail for her. Bibbity-bobbity-boo! Two years later, Vessey now looks and swims like an actual mermaid with a comfortable, fully functional mermaid's tail—made out of wetsuit fabric, plastic molds, and a digitally printed sock—and attached suit. Magical, isn't it?

WIZARD WORLD TO POSTPONE LA SHOW AND CANCEL TEXAS SHOW

Congers, NY (January 9, 2009) – Wizard Entertainment announced today that it has postponed its 2009 Wizard World Los Angeles show slated for March 13-15 and cancelled the Wizard World Texas show November 6-8 due to the current economic climate.

The successful Philadelphia and Chicago shows will go on as planned. Wizard World Philadelphia, featuring Guest of Honor Garth Ennis, is June 19-21 at the Philadelphia Convention Center and Wizard World Chicago, featuring comic legend George Perez, is August 6-9 at the Rosemont Convention Center.

Superhouse!

Superman's home planet Krypton was destroyed, but his house on Earth will live on thanks to loyal fans and an online auction that raised $100,000 to restore the rotting home where the Man of Steel was created.

Everything from original artwork to a role on the hit television show "Heroes" was sold in the month-long auction, which ended on Tuesday, to save the dilapidated Cleveland, Ohio, house where Superman was dreamed up by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster more than 70 years ago.

"This was easily the most humbling spectacular project I've ever been part of, and showed just how much people care about this character and why today Superman still matters," said novelist Brad Meltzer, who organized the auction.

Meltzer said $101,744 was raised in the month-long sale of art, memorabilia and other donated goods, more than double the $50,000 goal. The extra money will allow organizers to fix up not just the outside but also the inside of the Cleveland house where an elderly couple now live.

Meltzer, who discovered the deteriorating house while researching a novel, said at first he wasn't sure people would care about restoring the red-and-blue house where the superhero who wears the red-and-blue suit was dreamed up in 1932.

But the response has been overwhelming.

"The house where Google was created is saved. The farm where Hewlett-Packard was founded is preserved. We protected the house where Dr. Seuss lived, where Elvis lived," noted Meltzer. "So the idea that Superman's house was just rotting away struck everyone as inherently wrong."

Meltzer, who offered the naming rights to a character in his next novel as part of the auction, takes no credit for saving the home, saying loyal fans of the comic book hero came to Superman's rescue.

"We're all Clark Kent. We all know what it is like to be boring and ordinary and we all want to be able to rip open our shirt and do something beyond ourselves. That's what happened here. Ordinary people made a difference."

The only comic I waited to buy in the '80s was the Rocketeer. Dave Stevens the creator, died yesterday from leukemia, a disease he had been battling for some years. He was 52 years old.

The Secret Cover!

I was asked by Art Director Jay Rogers of Cartoon Network to draw a page for their 2008 calendar. It's for the upcoming show The Secret Saturdays by Jay Stephens (of Tutenstein, Oddville & Jetcat, Chick and Dee, and Land of Nod fame). The idea for a comic cover was by Jay Rogers and Sr. Writer, Clint Carruth. Pencilled by me, inked by Mark Prudeaux, and then colored, typeset, laid out and P'shoped by Jay R. Unfortunately the calendar is only available to the CN staff and select folks. This was a lot of fun to draw in Jack Kirby's style, even though I had to get it done in one night due to some mixed communication on my part. I've posted some of my roughs as well. Mistakes and all!

Yes, it has been a long time since I've posted anything on this blog. I've even fallen behind on my printing. But don't worry folks, issue #8 will be printed next month. Issues 9 and 10 will also be ready for Comic-Con 08 (Issue 10 will hopefully be in color). That is of course if I get a booth. I'm on a waiting list. I am also trying to have my Sea-Bolt statue produced in time. The producing is not the problem, it's the shipping and storage that I need to figure out. Anyway, you get the picture. We're still here! And Silver Comics is still the most fun that you will ever have for just a lousy two bucks. Happy 2008!

These rough storyboards were done for Captain Rescue #1 back in 1992 or 1993. Unfortunately, the final pencils came out too clean resulting in the inkings being too clean also. That's what happens when you work in licensing for too long. Inking the pages myself may have changed that. I am however redrawing this story for issue #10 of Silver Comics. I plan to put back all the atmosphere that these original thumbnails had.

Comics For A Cause

Francisco Briton, my uncle in the Philippines is suffering from Acute Renal Failure or what called as "Failed Kidneys". This is due to complications from severe Diabetes which he acquired over the years. Recently, he had a couple of surgeries to attach an AV Fistula so that they could connect a Dialysis machine to flush the urine from mixing with his blood. So far it's not going as smoothly as expected. The hardship of travelling to and from one hospital to another, when one is suffereng from this ailment, are just too much for an average man to take. But my uncle hangs on to dear life.

His wife, daughter and son, as well as his daughter in law and baby are still grasping for that little thread of hope for Francisco. Hoping to alleviate the pain and wishing him recovery. But the cost and expenses of the treatment are adding more to their hardship and suffering.

With this, I'm launching a "Comics For A Cause" campaign to help him and his family on the expenses. A little bit of help could make a lot of difference. I know there is a HERO in all of us and your support will be a comforting and saving hand to a man like my uncle, Francisco.

A few blogs back I announced that Santa would be getting his own graphics novel. Here's an illustration of The Man Called Santa and Rudolph, the Laser- Nosed Reindeer, compliments of Pedro Astudillo. It should give everyone a taste of what's to come. Pedro has been grinding his fingers to the bone, writing and designing Santa's new world. I wish that I could say more, but I don't want to spoil Christmas morning.

The Green Lantern's Eternal Flame.

Mart Nodell, whose creations ranged from Green Lantern to the Pillsbury Doughboy, died Dec. 9.

Born Nov. 15, 1915, he made his career in art and created Green Lantern for the company that is DC Comics today. Recently, the page that was his initial proposal for the character was discovered to have survived.

Nodell and his wife Carrie, who died in 2004, were convention regulars. Mart's last show was the Motor City Comic Con in May.

May his light burn bright.

I'll need to write a new and fantastic tale to go along with this masterpiece! Hmmm . . I've a feeling it may involve "time travel".

I remember being twelve years old the summer of '75 when I picked up Giant-Size X-Men #1 from my local 7-11 for just 50¢. I don't think anyone knew what was coming. The X-Men were back in a big way and a lot of that credit goes to Dave Cockrum. Very few people leave behind a legacy. But Cockrum's contribution has crossed over from comics to movies, toys, animation and video games. In other words, a true cultural phenomenon. Cockrum's work is all around us, having shaped a generation or two. Thank you Mr. Cockrum, your work still inspires that kid in me.

In the introduction to “Silver Comics” #1, Keoni Beeyok states, “The hope of Silver Comics is to re-introduce you to stories that run on the fuel of adventure, storytelling, and some good old fashioned artwork.”

The first four issues of this series accomplish this hope in spades. Each issue of “Silver Comics” combines different artistic styles with the sensibilities of classic golden- and silver-age comics. Honestly, most of the silver-age comics I have read, I haven’t enjoyed as much as these issues of “Silver Comics.”

Each issue includes multiple short comics typically serializing the adventures of different ongoing characters. There are also stand-alone stories, pin-ups, and even a prose entry in different issues, but, for the most part, the issues follow a rotating cast of larger-than-life characters.

When creating a new universe of characters with a golden- or silver-age feel, the two biggest mistakes possible are either copying established characters too closely or using a tone that comes off too much like parody. Thankfully the “Silver Comics” characters avoid both of these pitfalls very successfully. The parallels that can be drawn are due only to the fact that there are certain archetypes inherent in the superhero genre, and when the “Silver Comics” characters mirror “brand-name” characters more closely, it can best be described as homage.

The characters that make the most appearances in “Silver Comics” are Sea-Bolt, a hero for the seas; Cloud Buster, a soldier who becomes trapped in the super-strength mega-suit issued by the military; Man-Star, a superman-like character who—to his own horror and his world’s—kills a “peace observer;” The Man Called Santa, yep, that’s THE Santa who ends up battling Satan himself; Chameleon Man, a detective-type homage to Alex Toth; and The End, another detective-type but more on the level of Batman, for example. There are other characters, as well, who have just shown up on a one-time basis (so far, anyway).

The vast majority of the stories are great fun to read, well-written, and well-paced for the serial format. Really the only character that could have been more successful in a one- or two-story arc is The Man Called Santa, which has, after four issues, worn itself out and is falling flat. Characters I’d personally like to see more of are Chameleon Man, Man-Star, Sea-Bolt, The End, and Captain Rescue.

The art is just as enjoyable as the stories. Varying from cartooning to nearly Alex Ross-like realism, the art changes from issue to issue even with the same characters, making the stories even more dynamic and surprising. The art is so skillfully realized, it really should be garnering more attention.

The bottom line is that no matter if you grew up with the silver-age influence or if you’re simply looking for a change of pace, do yourself a favor and pick up “Silver Comics” starting from #1 for a fun, exciting, and enjoyable read.

What's in a logo?

Everything, if you want to get noticed. In a sea of comic book covers, it's important to have a logo that will attract customers. Designer Chris Roberts is the man behind almost all of the Silver Comics logos, including Chameleon-Man's. A big part of the reason why critics praise Silver Comics for being fresh and different, yet retro in feeling, is because of Chris' logo designs. He's made a huge contribution to the exciting world of comics in just a short period of time. And I'm proud to have so much of his work in my book. Do we really need another comic book?

I’m very excited to present the introduction to the Silver Comics universe. I was asked to say a few words about how this comic fits into the comics culture of today. After some thought, I came to a realization: it doesn’t! Let me explain why: There is a changing sentiment that has evolved in the comics world, regarding entertainment and realism. The growing assumption is, one should not see any difference between the kind of world presented in comics and the world we see out of our windows. Out of this philosophy, a few developments have occurred. We’ve seen the introduction of social commentary and ‘real world’ environments. Not evil developments, of course, but different; the comic book world is less other-worldly, less mysterious.

There’s an unfortunate snobbery towards the comic books of old, the ones that indulged the bright, clean city streets and so-called naiveté. It’s considered foolish now, to suggest that the comic book environment be any different than the one we see on the evening news. The origin and existence of the hero, villain, and various technologies, strangely, are more easily accepted. So here we have a selective insistence on reality, which is an interesting thing to insist upon within a foundationally make-believe story. Another important shift in comic books has gradually cemented itself into the zeitgeist. We’ve watched our comic book heroes become less heroic. Super heroes (the human ones) are humans too, some say, and why should they get the glossy finish? Super heroes have to psychologically justify to us, the reasonable people, why we should ever believe that anyone would dress up in silly costumes and run around the neighborhood. We need to relate to these people! That is, we’re all adults, and adults don’t do this sort of thing, right? Again, a realistic explanation is demanded. Therefore, the unattainable ideal of the hero has been replaced by an attainable version. Perhaps in the past, the comic book placed their emphasis somewhere else. Not in the similarities between our world and theirs, but in the differences.

Perhaps their inspiration was not a world that was synonymous with their own, but instead antonymous, in those days of unabashed escapism, upon finishing the comic, one would enjoy a magical decompression period of re-entering the real world. The onset of reality, mundane as it can be, made the journey feel even more fantastic and distant. It is this feeling of wonder from which this comic book draws its inspiration. The hope of Silver Comics is to re-introduce you to stories that run on the fuel of adventure, storytelling, and some good old fashion artwork.

The escapism I mention earlier is in full display here, with the promise of more moments of decompression when you’re done. All of us at Silver Comics look forward to hearing from you, and we thank you for purchasing this comic. Please enjoy.
